"You look hot." Poppy's eyes swept over me, and she whistled through her teeth. "I didn't know you had it in you."

"Not you as well." I climbed out of the car, shaking my head. It wasn't like I was dressed in one of Devlin's hooker dresses. Okay, so the tank top showed off my curves more than usual, and the shimmery pants clung to my legs like a second skin, but the oversized jacket covered most of me.

"Don't cover yourself up. Own it, new girl. Kai won't be able to keep his eyes off you."

"He'd better; he has a game to win."

"I thought you didn't like hockey?"

“I don’t.” Although it was definitely growing on me.

A sea of black and red greeted us, but Poppy made easy work of guiding us through the crowd. I hugged my jacket tighter suddenly feeling very exposed.

"Come on, we don't want to miss anything."

Kids from school gathered at the concession stand, and the anticipation of the game buzzed in the air. I smiled at a couple of younger boys wearing jerseys with 'Stanton' across the back.

We found our seats just as the teams entered the rink. Kai's eyes fell on us, and a bolt of something shot through me. The demon stirred. I’d become more attuned to it recently, and Kai was the trigger. His presence, the way he made me feel, the fire—the demon savored it all.

But so did I.

"You're so freaking lucky," Poppy said over the noise. "I mean look at him."

And I did.

Kai was busy barking orders at his team, last-minute words of encouragement. His back was to us now, but it didn't matter. I imagined his serious expression, eyes shining with determination and fight. He looked at me that way whenever he needed to get his point across. I could picture the intensity, the passion. Heat uncoiled in my stomach, and my cheeks flushed. Devlin's words flashed in my mind. She was right—I was thirsty for him, but I didn't want to hurt him.

Ever.

I had to believe I could control it. Kai had shown me that I could, but that was just a kiss. What if things progressed? We were already struggling to resist the pull between us.

"Hey, Daiya." Lacey appeared at the end of our row with Tamara and Cami trailing behind. I smiled ignoring Poppy's grumble.

“Hey." Returning her wave, I shuffled along to make room.

"I'm glad you came. It'll mean a lot to Kai." Lacey's voice was quiet, but from the way Tamara snorted, I knew she'd overheard.

What the hell was her problem?

"Ignore her, she's just jealous. She's wanted Stanton since ninth grade." Poppy glanced around me and gave Tamara an over-the-top wave.

"Poppy," I scolded. "Let's try and get along."

Poppy mumbled something, but then the teams were entering the ice, and the crowd started to cheer.

"Ooh, isn't it exciting? I can't get enough of watching Jack play."

I smiled back at Lacey and then settled my gaze on Kai.

It was such a normal thing to do—watch your school play hockey, that I didn't want to ruin it by overthinking.
